FWA Recap

Mar. 20th, 2012 05:07 pm
So - back from FWA and gonna do a the good, the bad, and the strange things list rather than a real entry

The Bad
Finances... first furry con I've done where I've gone negative. I've always at least broken even. I think it was an oversaturation issue, way too many dealers/artists for the amount of con-goers.

Dealers room temps.  I was freaking freezing. and I wasn't the only one. In knee high leather boots, thick socks, a t-shirt, armwarmers a hat, and a light sweatshirt I bloody well freezing.

But to be fair those were the ONLY bad things.

The Strange
More 'clingy'/overattentive/'I bought things from you therefore you must be my best friend' customers there than any other con (This invariably gets me - It wasn't me was it? e-mails from the perfectly nice people that I enjoyed talking too. The people who were overattentive never have a clue... so please don't e-mail me and ask if its you. If you are aware of talking to me and worrying about talking too much it probably wasn't and I won't answer them)

A guy who I have had creepy vibes from in the past was there, and still giving off the creepy vibes (he could be perfectly nice, I just get weird vibes)

Someone I knew from another con fansqueed over meeting me. Which entertained me b/c they clearly forgot they got work from me at another con ><

The Good
PEOPLE! I got to hand out with the ever fantasticKenket, Kyell, Sidian, P.Moss, Kyoht, Myenia, Kyro, Rukis, and other people whose names I forget, as well as meet quite a few awesome artists/people I hadn't met before including CentraDragon, and Sebastion

Got to GO to a con event, not just a panel. (This is what happens when you don't have homework boys and girls) Went to the dance competition and watched people who clearly either don't have bones or who are double jointed dance AMAZINGLY in fursuits.  Way cool.

Had delicious food.

Talked to awesome people. Met awesome people, lots of new people on the other side of the table.

Dinner w/Kit, Kyell, Kenket, Bear, Jimmy and more... (And Jimmy's badge, which was a great deal of fun to paint)

Awesome roommates of awesome

So thats my superquickanddirty con wrap up. Because I know I'll forget things and don't feel like trying to be eloquent.  I am so terribly thankful that I am done with working cons until AC. I'm excited to paint and art, and not feel like all I am is a ConPrepDroid.  ConPrepDroidness is not fun.
So I went to pick up some stuff/sort out some stuff at my exes where I used to live. (We are still friends this is normally no cause for concern). But it contained mail.

Mail that I should have gotten months ago.

Mail from the freaking IL government, that apparently the taxes I thought I filed I didn't.

So there was a 3 way fail. My failure to file (I remember getting through it, but then the internet went down, but I got far enough I forgot that the internet failed). IL failure to change my address as I requested. And then the exes failure to post mail to me.

One of those letters was about how they have revoked my tax license and that I may no longer be able to work that event in the future.

Which is MFF.
Which is my big con for the fourth quarter.

Tried to call once already and haven't been able to get in touch with them and they have locked me out of the internet reg since they pulled my license.  This is crap.
How is it almost done with February? How is this year almost 1/6th over? What did... Where did... WHAT?

In other news.  CONDFW went FANTASTICALLY. Far better than last year and really, just better than I had hoped. I basically expected to cover con fees and that was it, and instead I covered my flight too! Hooray! I came to this con knowing its a small con, it didn't have great profits last year but the people were lovely and it was a week before my big con for the month (Texas Furry Fiesta) so I figured it would be worth showing up and seeing all of the fantastic people (because it really is run by some awesome people). So YAY! Unexpected sales!  Getting to see Fantastic People! Weekend of WIN!

So I have been down in Texas since late last Wednesday and since then I have really been running around like a crazy person. I am trying to fit in seeing all of my friends/family that I can in between cons and such so today has been the first day that I have had ANY real time to myself. Don't get me wrong, I am so freaking grateful to have gotten to spend time w/everyone, but it was kind of nice to wake up this morning, drink my tea, and get caught up on business (and webcomics :P).  So I will spend the next couple hours doing work and then head on over to organize some stuff with one of my friends.

Anyhoo... busy year has been busy. I am really looking forward to the con this weekend, but you know what I am really looking forward to? April. I don't have any cons in April. And I am looking forward to doing ART.
So my schedule for this year is crazy.

Travel plans. I leave tomorrow morning at O'Dark'Hundred (i.e. 3:30am) for RMFC in CO. Wheeeeee... Looking forward to the con though! I can't wait! I should be in CO for around a week

And as for future cons/travel plans. I am doing ArmadilloCon in Austin the last weekend of this month, AnimeFest in Dallas the first weekend of Next month. And have a fancy schmancy invite only gala on the 23rd of September. Please be aware that these are my LAST CONS IN TEXAS UNTIL FURRY FIESTA! and I may not be doing much more in Texas.

After a lot of back and forthing and trying to make things work, my boyfriend and I are splitting up. I am currently trying to figure out if I'm going to move to CO, which I adore. Or to NJ where I know I have free rent and family in the area. I am weighing out my support bases/how likely I think it is that I could get a part time job fairly soon in Denver, and the social politics that come with the free rent in NJ... So bear with me, my life is pretty hectic right now. In any case, the latest I would move would be end of September, and the earliest would be beginning of September. I am still figuring out logisitics and needing to get stuff packed up. We've lived together for 3 years so figuring out whose stuff was initially whose kind of sucks...

In any case, thats my life update, and hopefully I'll see you all at these next cons... Gonna post old art to ebay when I get back with cheap minimum bids. I can't move it all.

So This month is completely crazifaced.
In an act of probably just pure stupidity or overconfidence I decided a good idea was to do three conventions this month. Well, not so much decided it kind of went like this.
Well of course I NEED to do AnthroCon, too many cool artists go there and it is near family, and with any luck I will do much better than last year.
And A-Kon is near me and it is a low stress (in terms of local - not in terms of squeeling anime teenage fangirls) very fun con so IF I can get in that would be fab (sold out in under 2 minutes because it's CRAZY like that) and I got in so woohoo.
And then I learned about DucKon, and my brain said, "Hey, you're driving to Pittsburgh anyhow, and it's kind of on the way so you should do that, lots of cool people there and it is an area you want to start doing work for so howabout you go there."
And suddenly I had three conventions back to back.  Wheeeeee.... So while I have enough art I was struck by the sudden realization that my merch was INCREDIBLY low, and proceeded to run around like a very desperate headless chicken until I got the order placed. So now I am just sitting rather anxiously hoping that I will get everything together in time to put together my new stickers/magnets for A-Kon this weekend.  *just remembered I need to make more mugs, crap*

So if I am a bit AWOL, well thats why.  But anyhow, The plus side is AFTER the conventions I am going to spend two weeks on the east coast ENJOYING myself, approaching galleries, and generally NOT being at conventions.  I am trying to figure out what route I'll take back... depending on time I may truck along the east coast southwards and then go across, I have family I haven't seen in 6 years that live in Virginia so... It's a perhaps.

In any case, expect me to be updating briefly, if at all for the next few weeks, as my head may well explode from the crazy.

In other news I started some seeds that my aunt gave me in the house (because with triple digit weather Texas is killing seedlings right now) and we'll see if they survive my trip away (i.e. will Todd water the little guys).

Here, have some art!
